AFTER HOURS SESSION

THE PEOPLE IN FOG a.k.a. DJ SODEYAMA

- Could you share the thoughts and ideas behind this mix?

I don't have any particular thoughts on this, but since I brought in Euphonia this time, I aimed to create a mix that conveys the essence of Euphonia as much as possible.

 - Can you tell us about your approach to creating mixes?

I haven't owned a DJ set for over ten years, and I usually don't record mixes, so most of my recordings are from live sets. When I record outside of a live setting, the atmosphere is different, and I tend to overthink making it sound polished. That said, I rarely listen to mixes with a strong live feel in my personal time. The approach can vary greatly depending on how I establish the concept.

- What methods do you prefer when searching for new music? Do you still enjoy browsing for music in record stores, or have you come to prefer online purchases?

I buy both records and digital music. For new releases, I often search based on the labels, artists, and distribution networks I've followed over the years. When looking for new releases in stores, I usually just pick up whatever catches my eye and give it a listen. As for used records, I often buy them without listening first. I enjoy the lottery-like thrill of discovering if I've found a hit or a miss. It's probably a habit from the past, growing up in a time when pre-listening wasn’t an option (laughs). I rarely buy records online.

- Besides DJing, what stimulates your creativity?

I think it's about music production and design as hobbies. I believe that tasks such as creating music, mixing/mastering, etc., have a significant impact on DJs as well. During sound checks before parties, instead of discussing highs and lows, I can talk specifically with engineers about wanting to raise or lower certain frequencies (Hz). Understanding aspects like positioning, phase differences, and the compatibility of mixed sounds deepens one's understanding of music, thereby altering a DJ's mix. Design is similar to creating music, so it positively influences both aspects.

- Do you have any advice for those looking to start a career as a DJ?

It's spirit.

- What plans do you have for 2024?

I'm preparing for 2025.
