AFTER HOURS SESSION

SONOKI

Could you share the thoughts and ideas behind this mix?

In the current era where digital play is prevalent, I've been focusing on records that were never released digitally in the past, as well as picking up records priced under 500 yen. My habit of adapting to the scene on the spot came through again this time. When I imagined the live feel of the ELLA stream, it naturally led to the content of this session—a trance-like mood with elements of deep house. My goal was to maintain a pleasant mood and land smoothly, but as usual, it ended up being a mix like a bento box meal, which I guess is also part of my style.

Can you tell us about your approach to creating mixes?

Instead of just selecting tracks, I mix while getting into the vibe myself. It may sound obvious, but this approach usually yields better results. I try not to get too caught up in matching keys or over-preparing, as it often hinders my ability to groove with the mix.

What methods do you prefer when searching for new music? Do you still enjoy browsing for music in record stores, or have you come to prefer online purchases?

I usually buy things in digital format when possible. I use the curation on record store websites as a reference for my digital purchases. If there's something I really want that isn't available digitally, I'll buy it on vinyl. For used records, I always go to record stores.

Besides DJing, what stimulates your creativity?

Meeting new people. Regardless of their background, I try to communicate with everyone I meet and I also find walking to be very inspiring.

Do you have any advice for those looking to start a career as a DJ?

I think you should just play the songs you want to play or the ones you like. If you can't keep it up, it's probably just because you don't really like it, so it's fine to quit. I often find myself feeling jealous of young DJs who are just starting out, so having a good sense of music is crucial. I started late, but I would like younger people to go abroad on working holidays and experience DJing there.

What plans do you have for 2024?

Since March 2023, I've moved my base of life to Berlin. I love absorbing new things, so not just as a DJ, but also beyond my life in Germany, I'm considering relocating to other regions. I hope to live happily and at my own pace, enjoying every moment.
