AFTER HOURS SESSION

TOSH7

- Could you briefly explain the setup of equipment and instruments used in this performance?

The beats are created using the Live Loops feature in Logic Pro X, where pre-prepared instrumental loop materials are played back in real time. All effects are also sourced from within Logic Pro X. For the bass, I use a ZOOM B3 and a Darkglass Electronics Microtubes B7K Ultra V2. The keyboard is a MIDI controller, with sounds switched and played via Ableton Live on a PC. As a wildcard element, I connect a KORG Monotribe to an EARTHQUAKER DEVICES Avalanche Run. All of these are routed through an ALLEN & HEATH ZEDi-10 mixer.

- What was the concept behind the creation of this unique trio formation with machines and two live instruments (keyboard and bass)?

I think it all started with the idea that "it would be interesting to play house music live." While the musical style is slightly different, I’ve taken some inspiration from Disclosure’s setup.

- The sound has a strong session-like quality, but is there a member (or part) who takes the lead in sound creation during songwriting or live performances?

There isn’t a specific member (or part) taking the lead. When it comes to composing, Paul.U often creates the initial demo, but we complete the tracks by exchanging ideas among the three of us. During live performances, it feels more like a session where each of us listens to each other's sounds and plays accordingly.

- What genres do you usually listen to as a listener? Could each of the three of you share?

Paul.U: There isn’t a specific genre, but recently, I’ve been into gentle music.

Sengo: Lately, I’ve been listening to atonal music close to the Romantic era (Alban Berg). Music that’s centered around the piano tends to be my favorite. As for jazz, I’ve listened to Brad Mehldau the most.

Kita: I don’t stick to a particular genre, but overall, I gravitate toward soulful music.

- Could you tell me about the 'fourth member' who is responsible for the artwork?

I’m a designer named Takumi Kasaki. I’ve been responsible for all of TOSH7’s jackets as well as flyers and merchandise for our self-organized event MotherBoard. While it hasn’t been officially announced, I officially joined the team around 2022.

I’ve known Kita since elementary school, and I got to know the other members around 2019. Currently, my work is mostly focused on graphic design, but moving forward, I plan to expand into various forms of artwork beyond just graphics.

-  If you don't mind sharing, could you tell us the origin of the unit name 'TOSH7'?

The name TOSH7 was something that just came up, and it doesn’t have any particular meaning or origin. In fact, I chose a meaningless name like TOSH7 because I want our activities to give it meaning. So, if one day I see something being referred to as “TOSH7-like” or something similar, I’d be really happy.

- What methods do you prefer when searching for new music? Do you still enjoy browsing for music in record stores, or have you come to prefer online purchases?

Paul.U: I usually search on BandCamp, but on my days off, I also visit record stores. I love the entire ritual of discovering new music through records—going to the store, picking them up, buying them, and dropping the needle.

Sengo: I’m completely a modern-day type, using Apple Music, YouTube, and Bandcamp. I grew up without knowing the joy of digging through vinyl.

機他: Mostly BandCamp and record stores. I also rely on my friends.

- Besides music, what stimulates your creativity? Could each of the three of you tell us?

Paul.U: It's film, poetry, and novels. I’ve been greatly influenced by creative theories, especially those related to film.

Sengo: Honestly, I don’t have a particular influence. Occasionally, I flip through philosophical books.

機他: Conversations with people and art.

- Do you have any advice for those looking to start a career as a musician?

Let's have fun!

- What plans do you have for 2025?

It sounds like you're stepping into an exciting phase with both music production and live shows ahead! Best of luck with your future projects, including "MotherBoard" vol. 4! If you need any help or ideas as you work through these, feel free to reach out.
