AFTER HOURS SESSION

Ryu Kinoshita(DRAMATICBOYS/常夏) - Tropical & Chillout Vinyl Only Mix @LOGWAY BESS Fujisawa

- This time we recorded AHS at “LOGWAY BESS Fujisawa,” the exhibition site of the wooden home brand “BESS,” known for its log houses and other timber homes. How was it playing in a location like this?
The environment was completely different from what I’m used to, so I was really nervous (laughs). But the overall vibe of this wooden building and the fireplace made it feel so wonderful—I actually felt like I’d want to live here.

- Could you share the thoughts and ideas behind this mix?
I run a music bar called Chill Out Sakaba ~Tokonatsu~ in Fujisawa, so I thought I’d try to bring an “ever-summer” vibe partly to promote the bar. Normally the bar operates at night, but for today’s filming, I brought music that fits more of a daytime feel. In terms of sound, it’s a broad kind of chill-out, mixing various genres.

- Were there any key tracks in today’s set, or any songs you absolutely had to play?
If I were to pick just one track, it would be Hoshikuzu by Makoto Kubota & Yuyake Gakudan, which I played at the end. I really love the lyrics of this song. I spent all the way until this morning deciding what to play today, but I knew I wanted this track to close the set, so I built the mix leading up to it.

- While running your bar, you also play as a DJ in various places—how would you describe your usual DJ style?

I like a wide range of music, so unless there are specific requests when I’m booked, I usually play freely based on the mood of the moment while still keeping the overall character of the party in mind, rather than sticking to any particular genre.

- Could you also tell us about your DJ unit DRAMATICBOYS, which you formed with PONTIAC a.k.a. BINKAN?

It’s a B2B duo formed in 2016 with “Pon-san,” who has been a friend since our student days. We both love warm, Balearic-leaning music that evokes scenery and imagery, and we enjoy playing all kinds of music—from house and disco to J-pop—while adapting to the character of each party. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the duo’s formation!

- You were also the organizer of the popular outdoor party “Hikyousai”, which ran from 2007 to 2023. Over the 14 editions, many things must have happened—what would you say was your greatest experience or takeaway from Hikyousai?

More than anything, the greatest thing has been meeting and building so many important friendships along the way.

- Would you like to organize a large-scale event like Hikyousai again in the future?

Right now, I’m not very interested in large parties. I’d rather create something on a smaller scale—around 100 people—where everything is within reach of my own eyes, and the focus is really on the community.

- Shonan has long been an area that nurtures various cultures. How would you describe Fujisawa, one of the towns in this region, and how is the music and DJ culture there today?

It’s been seven years since I opened Tokonatsu and moved to Fujisawa, but even before that there was already a culture of throwing parties in local bars and shops around the city. Many independent stores have turntables and play records, the range of music genres is wide, and both music and party culture are deeply rooted here.

There aren’t any clubs, but almost every weekend different venues host parties. It feels a bit like a block party—locals from their 20s to their 70s hop from place to place, regardless of generation or genre, hanging out together with an open mind.

Even on weekdays, if people happen to gather somewhere, it can suddenly turn into everyone drinking tequila together—it's kind of a wild place (laughs).

Another thing is that there are so many young people with incredible taste here, and one cool DJ or party after another keeps emerging. It’s a pretty rare kind of city.

- Aside from your DJ work and “Tokonatsu”, what else inspires your creativity?

Spending time in nature, going on trips, and meeting new people, I guess.

- What kind of mindset is important to you as a DJ?

First and foremost, it’s about enjoying the music and the party, and sharing joy and those special little moments with everyone.

- Do you have any advice for those looking to start a career as a DJ?

If you feel like doing something, just go for it!

And if you want to start DJing, you should come by Tokonatsu—you’re always welcome.

- What plans do you have for 2026?

On Wednesday, April 29 (holiday), we’ll be hosting **PARADISE FREAKS**, the fastest beach party of 2026, organized by Tokonatsu at the seaside spot “Minatoya” on the **Miura Peninsula**!

Now in its third year, it’s a cozy party where chill and Balearic sounds meet good vibes and great people. If you’re out enjoying the holiday, we’d love for you to stop by and hang out!
