AFTER HOURS SESSION

Nina Yamada

- Could you share the thoughts and ideas behind this mix?

I don’t often get the chance to play house sets, but for this mix, my first in a while, I wanted to end on a high note with BFC’s Galaxy as the climax. With that in mind, I built the mix around the lead-up to that track. Rather than sticking to a single style, I packed it with house tracks that left a lasting impression on me.

- Can you tell us about your approach to creating mixes?

I often start by choosing one essential track as the theme and then build the mix around it, considering the flow of the entire set. I pick out tracks that fit that theme, then work on arranging them in the right order.

- What methods do you prefer when searching for new music? Do you still enjoy browsing for music in record stores, or have you come to prefer online purchases?

I do buy records online, but I really prefer getting them at a record store. There’s something special about discovering a gem when a trusted shop owner gives you a recommendation. I also love digging for records when I travel; the ones I find in different places become cherished memories.

- Besides DJing, what stimulates your creativity?

Apart from my DJ activities, I also work in graphic design. I create designs for flyers for parties I organize, and recently, I’ve been designing zines and liner notes for music labels. It’s so much fun to turn the inspiration I get from music and parties into a tangible design!

- Do you have any advice for those looking to start a career as a DJ?

I’m not really in a position to give advice, but I believe love for music and passion are everything!

- What plans do you have for 2024?

I’ll be DJing in Thailand for the first time in December! It’ll be my first DJ set in Asia outside of Japan, so I’m really looking forward to it.
