AFTER HOURS SESSION

Mas Kato

- Could you share the thoughts and ideas behind this mix?

This mix is something I haven’t had a chance to record / play live. The selection of dub and deep grooves. The e&s mixer helps to bring the curves alive!

- Can you tell us about your approach to creating mixes?

I always try to record something different for each mix, and I try to play for a new audience. I kind of enjoy recording a mix where there is no dance floor because it’s more for a home listening purposes.

- As part of your DJ tour in Japan, you also played at AFTER HOURS SESSION this time. How many times have you toured in Japan so far?

I go to Japan for holiday every year. I came first in 2023 to play at Mitsuki, Tokyo. In 2024, I played at Mitsuki and Womb in Tokyo, and Area in Osaka. This year I came for Mitsuki in Tokyo and Bar Inc. in Osaka.

- Could you tell us about the club music scene in Melbourne, Australia, where you're based?

Melbourne club scene is diverse in terms of music and demographics. There is a place for everyone and it’s a healthy environment where music, artists and events can grow.

- How about the club music scene in your hometown, Jakarta, Indonesia?

Jakarta club scene is sick! Very well connected to the rest of Indonesia and Asia. Like other big cities, Jakarta is very alive and stylish.

- Compared to those, what characteristics or attractions do you think the Japanese club scene has?

Equipment set up and sound system! Japan is serious with it. This time I visit Japan I play at 3 places and all with rotary mixer, that just shows how much care about it. Also the deep roots that Japan has with the instruments and turntables made in Japan, I always enjoy studying the Japanese scene

- How did you build your relationships with clubs and DJs in Japan?

My good friends Manato and Kazuma Onishi from Tokyo Love Hotel (Melbourne) host Japanese artists and that’s how it all started!

- When you travel abroad, are there any specific things you consciously do or efforts you make to build your career as a DJ in the places you visit?

Visit record stores and get to know local artists and labels. I always visit clubs and bars to get to know the local scene.

- Besides DJing, what stimulates your creativity?

Maintaining a balanced life, sleeping well, eating well and exercising - really helps me to maintain creative energy. I try to have a break from electronic music scene every now and then. I enjoy reading, going to cinemas and playing basketball.

- Do you have any advice for those looking to start a career as a DJ?

Be formless and open minded to something new. Be a student of the craft.

- What plans do you have for 2025?

Summer is coming up in Australia so I will be hosting some international artists and play some gigs here and there.
