- This time, you delivered a set of Brazilian music—your home country—using 7-inch records only. To begin with, could you share the thoughts or ideas behind this mix?
This is the first time I'm doing a tour overseas with vinyl only, i prepared a small bag with about forty 7 inch records and tried to bring something that would work both as chill for listening bars as well as groovy for a little dancefloor.
- In Brazilian music, there are many tracks that were released only on 7” records, or versions that exist exclusively on 7”. Besides the portability, is that one of the reasons why you choose to play Brazilian music on 7” vinyl?
Portability is definitely a big win for me because I want to travel light and buy records while I'm here. But the truth is I also only spin 7”s back home at my local spots. 45s feel more fun and interactive for me cause you go straight to the point and you also have to be on point all the time.
- Brazilian music has been popular in Japan for a long time, and styles like Bossa Nova, Jazz Samba, and MPB still seem to be especially loved here. Are those styles still appreciated in Brazil as well? Also, what genres are currently popular among DJs in Brazil?
Yes, it's been really heart-warning to see the appreciation and the knowledge for Brazilian music around here. Those genres are timeless in Brasil, Every corner you go in Rio there's a small bar playing Samba live. Besides that “Baile Funk’ has been growing around the world through the past decade. We have a party called “Rio Funk” in Auckland that's super popular.
- From your perspective as a Brazilian, what do you think is the unique appeal of Brazilian music?
The rhythm, instruments such as the “cuíca” and the “berimbau” that create such a unique sound, you don’t necessarily need to understand the lyrics as long as the rhythm touches your soul.
- Aside from Brazilian music, are there any genres you specialize in or are currently into—either as a DJ or simply as a listener?
Lately I really been digging lots of Cumbia which is actually not that popular in Brasil despite of the proximity, I like reggaeton but cumbia feels like more true essence latin music.
- What is the DJ culture and club music scene like in Auckland, New Zealand, where you're currently based?
“Kiwis” is how we call who grew up in New Zealand, they really love drum’n’bass which I enjoy but it’s not my thing for djing. But in NZ we also have the “Islanders” which are the Samoans, Tongans and also the Maori who love a good ol’ classic R&B.
- On the other hand, do you have any thoughts or impressions about Japan’s DJ culture and club music scene?
I’m really impressed on how people respect and care about vinyl here, so many listening bars and cafes that I follow from a far and I’m finally being able to visit and play at some of them. I knew i had to make this tour with vinyl only. Japan has set the tone for what’s becoming a trend worldwide and it’s a honour to be here witnessing this.
- In your opinion, what kind of skills or mindset do you think are important for building a DJ career abroad?
My main goal when I go on tour overseas is to connect with the scene, dig some music, interact with other DJs and play for a different crowd. Japan has some great skilled DJs and turntablists thats why I try to bring a different flavour which is simply spin the music I grew up to.
- Besides DJing, what stimulates your creativity?
Skateboarding has been my passion since forever, not necessarily trying tricks on the spot but simply cruising around feels good and it’s also a great way to explore the city. I brought my skate with me although I knew Japan is kinda strict with it. but still got some good skating around and visited some really good skateparks.
- Do you have any advice for those looking to start a career as a DJ?
Do it for love. Learn the craft, know your music.
- What plans do you have for 2025?
I try to make at least on big tour each year, last year was Europe and this year i’m glad I finally get to discover Asia for the first time. 2026 I complete 10 years of New Zealand so I want to give my self some good time off in Brasil, but of course i will be djing there, there’s a lot of new listening bars all over and i will bring some 7”s with me and maybe make a national tour. And hopefully I don’t take too long to return to Japan!
