AFTER HOURS SESSION

CHIDA

- Could you share the thoughts and ideas behind this mix?

Since this time it's a live recording done entirely on analog, I thought about what DJ set should be preserved for future generations in 2024. I decided to compile a set using only tracks from CockTail d’Amore Music, the Berlin party/record label that is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. Since I first played there in 2013, it has been the party overseas that I hold most dear, having played there 1-2 times every year until the pandemic started in 2020. The DJ unit Mascaras, which I formed with 5ive, was sparked by playing at CockTail d’Amore, and in this set, I included both original works and remixes released as Mascaras on the same label.

- Can you tell us about your approach to creating mixes?

In recent years, I have mainly been providing mixes for overseas radio and podcast requests. Based on the requests from each podcast host, whether it's Balearic, chill-out, listening sessions, disco-oriented, or house classics, I create mixes that fit the theme from my own collection.

- What methods do you prefer when searching for new music? Do you still enjoy browsing for music in record stores, or have you come to prefer online purchases?

I have always enjoyed discovering new music regularly at record stores. In recent years, my online discoveries have mostly come from Bandcamp, besides Soundcloud. I also frequently patrol the websites of companies like Germany's KOMPAKT, which distribute many labels in addition to their own, as well as various online record shops both domestically and internationally.

- Besides DJing, what stimulates your creativity?

The landscapes of the cities I visit on tour, illustrations and artworks, visual projects, documentaries, and films—all these various stimuli to my senses and thoughts greatly influence my creativity in music and DJ activities.

- Do you have any advice for those looking to start a career as a DJ?

Don't be confined to a single genre; if you find a sound you like, dive into it and listen deeply. Regularly record DJ mixes, share them with friends and acquaintances, or upload them to Soundcloud and observe the reactions. This is something anyone can do, and it can lead to opportunities. Also, if you find a DJ you like, it's very important to continually experience their sets on the dance floor. Sharing mixes and experiencing and enjoying other DJs' sets on the floor are things I've been doing for over 30 years since I started DJing.

- What plans do you have for 2024?

I've been playing long sets on the first Wednesday of every month at Mitsuki in Shibuya. In addition, I have an Asia tour planned for September, followed by a European tour in the fall and winter. I'm also working on new tracks as CHIDA. I'll keep everyone updated through my social media!
